Creativity was definitely a theme for our meeting on June 9th at Piece by Piece. The garments and garments-to-be provided many ideas for future project.

Maria’s photography shows each garment so well!

Paula combined single sided zipper loops with fabric of matching colors to make a yo-yo. Then she topped the puffy yo-yo with buttons coordinated in color. Notice the colors and button sizes . Beautiful combinations! After she used similar construction techniques and placed each "flower" on a hand dyed scarf whose colors coordinated with the zippers, fabric, and buttons, the results were sensational!

Barbara’s jacket was constructed using a light weight, imported, striped fabric and had a free flowing look as she modeled it for us. She used “Zona’s Jacket” by Sewing Workshop for the starting point of her jacket.

Barbara has plans for another jacket, perhaps using the same pattern, are she assembles a collection of batik strips in an array more beautiful than a rainbow.

Pat created an appliqued collage using red poinsettias, Santa images, and other predominantly red floral fabrics on the front and back of a vest constructed using red, green and cream stripped cotton fabric.

Both of Maria’s jackets demonstrated her expertise with detailed embellishment and fine workmanship.. Using two different styles of jackets, mandarin collar and lapel collar, she precisely and artfully applied studs, beads and stitchery. Buyer-appeal was terrific and each jacket was sold.

Winnie’s handbag fooled us with its suede appearance, but it was constructed of cotton fabric dyed in a single color’s variations from dark to light. Next time you see Winnie, notice her handbag and it will surprise you too.

The following is a summary of our meeting.

Welcome back to returning travelers!

Barbara brought her find of a beautiful print fabric from a fabric store in London. To her surprise, she won a fat quarter at the Darting Needles Quilt Show which was a perfect match to it.

Kris returned from her adventure West and saw more trains than she expected to see. She was delighted. She recently celebrated her birthday but she didn’t tell us that she had train decorations on her cake.

Maria returned from Hungary where she purchased the most interesting buttons.

Her recent finds at Hobby Lobby were basket making kits, stencils and a “jeweled” neckline decoration for a shirt.

The purse organizer she made during a class at Nancy’s Notions had lots of pockets of various sizes and would help keep purse things orderly. Maria is getting ready for craft shows in Brown Deer and in Milwaukee. We wish her good luck! The green military style jacket she made is embellished with such precision. She is making them in three sizes.

The next meetings are scheduled for November 11^th and December 9^th.

I will be in Athens, Greece during the next meeting. Please let me know before Tuesday, Nov. 2^nd if you plan to attend the meeting so I can confirm it with Piece by Piece.

Sew Savvy Meeting on August 12, 2010

Paula returned from her month in the wild west, North Dakota, with an amazing kimono made from a beautiful collection of fabrics with a definite Asian influence. Fabric in the Mind’s Eye by Sharon Baker was the stimulus for the project and the result definitely eye-catching. She used fabrics “left over” from the project to make an attractive, small wall hanging. Paula plans to display the kimono and the wall hanging on a wall in her office at Highlands School in Appleton.

Paula and her daughter participated in the Studio Tour in her area. A brochure advertised all the locations for the tour and gave a brief description of items available for sale along with the location of each participant. Paula’s daughter displayed jewelry and bracelets. The bracelets, called “cuffs”, are made of leather and decorated with metal recycled from old Ford cars. Of course, the metal is called “Fordite”. You will be able to see and purchase bracelets, made by her daughter at ArtStreet in Green Bay on the weekend before Labor Day.

Maria attended a class in fitting clothing at Hancock Fabrics. She bought a set of French curve rulers made by designtofit.com. The patterns shown by the instructor were Trufit patterns. A CD with instructions was also available. At the EAA quilt show sponsored by the Lakeside Quilt Guild, she saw a demonstration using a Double Diamond Ruler. She will be able to make interesting embellishments for her jackets using this ruler. The dark blue, military style, denim jacket Maria showed us had many embellishments: metallic rivets, embroidered motifs, unusual buttons as well as a variety of stitches using her embroidery sewing machine. We suggested that the selling price should be in the $85 to $155 range. We wish her good luck with sales at her next craft show.

Kris will be on her way to Montana next week with a stop in North Platte, Nebraska to see the biggest train yard in the US. She is planning to take along the Quilters’ Traveling Companion in order to make many stops in her search for railroad themed fabrics.

Sandy showed a black silk scarf decorated using Paintsticks and a few stencils.

At the EAA Quilt Show in the Oshkosh Senior Center, she purchased several fusible preprinted interfacings to make a tote bag, a grocery tote, and a neck wallet. Although the items could be constructed relatively quickly, the directions were not easy to follow. She didn’t recommend further purchases of the interfacing for herself.

Using the silk tie fabrics she purchased at XMI in Chippewa Falls, she made a pocket style wallet and a neck wallet. Sandy used a duck tape pattern to make another pocket style wallet. Her husband, who uses a paper clip to fasten his paper money together, wasn’t impressed with either of the wallets.

Notes from the Sew Savvy meeting on June 10, 2010

Theresa attended the lecture/demonstration given by Elinor Peace Bailey at the Nancy’s Notions Weekend a few weeks ago. The class was excellent and the demonstrations gave everyone a close up view of doll making techniques. Theresa found several patterns that she could use including a cell phone holder with a neck strap.

Paula shopped for wool sweaters at St. Vincent’s in Appleton, found several, felted them by washing them and then cut them apart to make petals for large flowers. She used small pieces of tightly rolled ribbing in the center of each flower to represent a stamen. We could think of many places on garments to use those attractive floral decorations.

Winnie bought a very colorful kit for a baby quilt. She finished the top and received several ideas about quilting it. Winnie recently acquired her grandmother’s Singer Featherweight sewing machine. Grandma bought it in 1952 for $182 and paid for it on an installment plan. We were very interested in the unusual metal attachments (feet) with unique shapes and moving parts. Hemmer, ruffler, bias binding attachment, etc.

A book entitled Vintage Attachments was mentioned and it would be very helpful as Winnie learns to use the machine.

Jo just returned from Delaware after helping her daughter, Mandy, move from New York City. Mandy will have an internship at the Winterther Museum for the summer and will work on restoring Betsy Ross’ original flag of the 13 colonies.
Jo found time to revisit Canvasbacks in Milwaukee and reported that many items are now 50% off. The hours are limited so it is important to phone first. Google Canvasbacks to get the phone number.

Mary brought the silk skirt, jacket, blouse and camisole that she bought at Canvasbacks several months ago. The fabrics are beautiful and the outfit can be worn year round for very dressy occasions.

Marie wanted purple buttons, could not find them at the fabric stores in Appleton and used polymer clay to make them herself. She used a rolling pin to flatten the clay, cut it into the shapes she wanted and then baked the clay to harden it. We will probably all want to try making buttons! Marie’s table runner has been completed with brightly colored thread and embroidery stitches from her sewing machine.

Karen’s husband wants to plant potatoes so, using an idea from the gardening section of a catalog, she made him large “grow” bags using a mesh fabric. Now he can plant potatoes where ever he wants to decorate the yard.

Karen brought along a tote bag that she won at the recent FVTC sewing/quilting retreat. Its unique feature is that it was made using selvages from many fabrics.

The hand dyed fabrics that Karen made recently were colorful and many were large pieces of previously white cotton. She received lots of suggestions about how to use the striking red and yellow one to make a whole cloth quilt.

A special guest was Mary’s granddaughter Lauren. She showed us the sleeveless dress that she made for the 4-H competition in her community. Lauren selected the fabric and sewed the dress. Mary helped with the appliqué on the bodice. On June 26, Lauren will model her dress and could qualify for the clothing competition at the Wisconsin State Fair. Good luck Lauren!

There was a brief discussion about Brubaker’s Fabric and Furniture store in Witthie and Yds in Winneconne.

Paula will be working at her summer studio in Minnesota until August.

Sew Savvy Meeting on May 13, 2010

What fun is was to see and talk about the items brought to this meeting! Maria was very busy with her camera at this meeting!

Karen’s purse was made using fluttery layers of batik fabrics and was finished with a pair of bamboo handles. The lining with its pockets was also made of batik fabric. It was definitely eye-catching.

Kris brought a remarkably clear photo of her grandmother and siblings taken about 1902. Grandma was wearing a plaid dress trimmed with lace. AND Kris brought the dress to show us. It was sewn both by hand and machine. Kris surmised that the dress had been made by a neighbor of grandma’s. Of course, we had to feel the fabric which we guessed was a combination of linen and wool. Kris is considering preserving the dress for the future by encasing it in a glass covered frame.

Barbara read with pride the award her mother received for the black dress she had entered in a Pennsylvania farm show in 1936 or ’37. Helen Bauman’s dress (mom) was constructed from a textured black boucle fabric. The fashionable dress had a side zipper and a back neck closure supported by very small covered buttons with matching fabric loops. Diagonal folds marking the front waist were flanked by a pair of inset pockets.

Sandy’s mom decorated a light blue chambray shirt with a variety of hand-embroidered motifs using embroidery floss and including her own initials. Jumbo rickrack trimmed the collar, cuffs and the front edge of the shirt. It had been constructed about 1955.

Sandy also showed a clutch style purse made from a single necktie using materials and a pattern provided by Donna Tegen, sewing/quilting instructor at FVTC. The pointed end of the necktie formed a flap closure which hid the Velcro under the flap and purse front.

The flap was trimmed with a decorative button.

Paula found and purchased three kimonos while she was in Burlington, Washington. Her husband wanted assurance that she would make something else using the fabric. She has been busy making aprons using denim blue jeans in a way that was so unique. She cut strips from the length of the legs for the base of the apron and used the pockets and waistband pieces for embellishment. The jeans were a wonderful find at an antique store where the storekeeper told her to fill an entire shopping bag with jeans and then charged only $5. Paula shared a great idea for constructing something useful when one is too tired to sew. She joined colorful pieces of fabric, including parts of projects left from past guild classes, to construct covers for journals.

Karen displayed a collection of vintage aprons she acquired from a friend of the family. We could recall our mothers and grandmothers wearing similar styles as they prepared meals and did housework.

Joann has been constructing colorful aprons from a pattern she drafted herself. The coordinated fabrics were purchased at Hobby Lobby and will be displayed on cardboard forms used by drycleaners when she displays them in November at a craft fair in Escanaba, her hometown. Great display idea. She is also preparing child sized aprons, zippered, purse sized tissue packages and table runners for the fair. She is sure to attract lots of customers with such a varied stock of items.

Pat showed neck scarves embellished with leaves constructed from pieces of wool fabric. Attractive idea!

Maria brought beautiful, eye-catching garments! The black boucle jacket with ¾ length sleeves was constructed from fabric Maria purchased in Hungary. The curved front edges and sleeve edges were trimmed with black, beaded braid. The white vest she brought was embellished with an embroidered peacock and trimmed with gold studs. The embellishments on the jean jacket she displayed also used studs for trimming along with grommets with embedded crystals. What great sources she has for embellishments!

It was terrific to visit with everyone again and to talk about such imaginative ideas. In fact, after the meeting I drove to Joann Fabrics looking for the bird fabric that Joann used in one of her table runners. The store no longer had the fabric, but Joann really had a great idea for a quick gift item.

We had a good laugh seeing Barb’s sock creatures. These are not run-of-the-mill kitties and doggies. In fact, they have unusual body shapes made from socks and have eyes and a variety of appendages. The only familiar creature was a sock monkey made from a pair of socks purchased at Fleet Farm. Barb even used a pair of her fish socks to create a pair of sock creatures. Her research led her to several books: Stupid Sock Creatures, Sock and Glove Creatures, Stray Sock Sewing and Make Your Own Stupid Sock Creatures. They make great one-of-a-kind gifts.

Pat S. brought along several interesting books: Fabricate (which I just had to order from Amazon.com as soon as I returned home from the meeting) and Kanzashi in Bloom (floral embellishments).

Maria has returned from trips to Hungary and to Universal Studios in California. She brought along several buttons that she has machine embroidered and an issue of Burda Magazine. Although the text was in Hungarian, there was an interesting pictorial article about fabric dyeing. She also showed us an unusual, abstract floral decoration she made during a machine embroidery class she took at Willett Fabrics in Fond du Lac from Dottie Stellmacher.

Jill showed us the apron she made using a pattern purchased from Virginia Lienhard of Gayfeather Fabrics at the meeting held at Pat H’s house. The apron pattern, 1928 Apron, is reversible and was made by placing the pattern on the bias on a striped piece of drapery fabric (side 1) and a blue fabric (side 2). The apron had nice body and looked like it would never wrinkle. She said that it seems to look nice on everyone. Her tip: make the ties longer so that it can be tied in front. AND she sold it immediately to a woman with whom she works! She intended to make aprons for her colleagues who belong to the Society of Decorative Painters. (google that to see the website of this national organization).

What a wonderful world of buttons we shared!
Jill’s mother strung her buttons together if they were identical. She also kept some on their original cards. Jill’s sister has made many buttons using polymer clay.

Ann’s buttons came from her mom, grandmother and antique stores. All sizes and colors! Ann told us that glass buttons feel cold to the touch. She showed us that the composition of some buttons can be tested by biting them. I watched her carefully during her demonstration and none of her buttons had pieces bitten off or bite marks. She passed a variety of plastic containers of buttons for us to examine.

Sandy had a few cards of small buttons (“baby clothing buttons”) which seemed to have silver paper behind them. No one knew why they had been sewn to the cards in that way. Her favorite button is made of pink felted wool, decorated with beads and fastened to a half ball cover. She brought along Fast, Fun and Easy Fabric Cover-Button Jewelry by Laura Kong.

Paula’s buttons live in a cylindrical glass container which is about two feet tall. All colors and all sizes and they probably multiply in there at night.

Kris passed part of her button collection for viewing.

Some of Theresa’s buttons are kept in circular, plastic containers with pie-shaped partitioned wedges inside. Each container has a lid which makes them stackable and almost tip proof. A variety of glass buttons and porcelain buttons were viewed.

Ann, Jill and Theresa also had boxes of buttons in addition to small containers. So there seems to be no single foolproof way to keep buttons sorted or unsorted!

Sandy described silk scarves she saw at Strictly Sailing, a sailboat show, in Chicago. Check out www.nauticalsilks.com. The vendor, Laura Livermore from Milwaukee, has found an excellent market for her hand painted silk scarves decorated with nautical signal flags.

Barb has a few garments from Canvasbacks in Milwaukee. She plans to bring a very unusual jacket to our next meeting. It you have garments from that manufacturer, please bring them along so we can see them. Canvasbacks is no longer making clothing or selling fabrics.

Suggestions for our next meeting on March 11th:

Suggestion from Theresa: In addition to writing her name on her books, she likes to write where the book was purchased and the date purchased on the title page.

Sew Savvy meeting on Nov. 12

The meeting, at Pat H’s house, was a beautiful setting for a delicious pot luck supper and a showing/modeling of garments made by Virginia Lienhard, owner of Gayfeather Fabrics in Madison.

Nineteen participants had an opportunity to continue their friendships throughout the meal and then observe Virginia as she modeled each garment, made comments on patterns, fabrics and construction.

Summary of Sew Savvy Meeting on October

There was so much information to share after a very busy September of quilt shows, classes out of town, and travel out of the country!

Travel

Maria returned from Hungary with, among other things, a beautiful set of buttons that she placed on the denim jacket she made. If you know someone who loves horses, she would love wearing this long sleeved denim jacket decorated with embroidered stylized horses. Another unique feature are the circular snaps on the collar tips. Look carefully at the photo of Maria’s jacket.

Pat returned from her son’s wedding in Costa Rica less than 24 hours before our meeting. We were so glad that she stayed in Appleton before returning to Marshfield! Although she had made a beige “mother of the groom” dress before the wedding, she decided at the last minute NOT to wear it. Instead she wore a dressy navy top made a few years ago with a pair of slacks that she also made. She was so pleased with the change and received very favorable comments from her family.

Ann went to a very stimulating workshop taught by Anita Mayer at Sieverts School of the Arts on Washington Island. She enthusiastically told about and showed us the hand embroidered samples she made. Ask to see her three ring binder of samples!

Mary told about four classes that she and Winnie participated in at the Wisconsin Sewing/Quilting Expo in Madison. She loved the jackets class taught by two women and their display of many variations of a jacket made from a single pattern.

Sandy went to the same Expo and made a Nancy Zieman wallhanging using ombre fabric. Since it isn’t completed, it will be shown at another meeting.

Both Mary and Sandy went to a presentation at Life’s A Stitch in DePere. Jill Dankleson, the stitch recipe expert, talked about threads, stabilizers, and bobbin embroidery. What impressed us was that she used striped fabric as a guide for rows of stitches! It made us consider stripes in a new way!

Ann and her friend Joanne plan to travel to Utah to take a class in pattern fitting using a technique involving the “seam method”. We are eager to see and hear more about the results!

Ann, in her relatively new role as Grandma, made a tepee for her granddaughter using Disney princess fabric. See photo. What a lucky child!

She will show us and tell us about a great many of the garments that she has sewn. The meeting will be at Pat Hammeke’s house on 400 W. River Rd. in Appleton. More details after all the arrangements have been confirmed.

Summary of the Sew Savvy meeting on August 13, 2009

What a stimulating meeting we had! Everyone brought summer projects that are either
underway or have been completed.

Pat has lots of pieces left over from the challenge jacket she recently completed. She is using these in four different widths in the Strippy Scrap Jacket, Brensan Studios. Her next quilt was inspired by the courthouse steps quilt pattern from Patchwork Products and was constructed from 1 1/2" strips, cut on grain, using scraps. That's not all! She finished a quilt made of 10" squares taken from family's clothing and 1930's prints. The size is a gigantic 102" x 110". Pat is not yet finished with the raw edge applique vest started in Rosemary Eichorn's class. The pattern is Sandra Betzina's "Today's Fit" vest. It reminded me of a flower garden of reds on a varied background of red and green fabric. She has been very busy sewing and quilting!

sharonschamber.com has a wide variety of instructional materials. Worthwhile watching!

Karen has been busy using her new retirement present to herself: a Bernina 830. Her rectangular wall hanging of silks, metallic fabrics, and cottons was made by combining 15" blocks, couching the seams with chenille yarn and then couching yarn spirals in a not-so-random pattern on top of the blocks. It is a stunning piece of work! Her question to the group concerned the best way to display it: put it in a frame or bind it using fabric. Some of the stitching was done on her Bernina 200. That's acceptable too, isn't it!

Karen brought her cording disk and samples of cords that she and husband Norm made. Nice possibilities for embellishments.
Karen's e bay find: a box of about 75 chenille couching yarns in original packaging for the astounding cost of $36.

Paula's A line coat inspired by Rachel Clark was constructed of cotton blues and golds with accents of orange. It is a breathtaking garment! She plans to bring it to Rachel's workshop for Darting Needles Quilt Guild on the weekend to ask Rachel about fine tuning the fit of the upper sleeves. This coat will have large snaps on the inside front facing and opposite front and beautiful buttons. - No buttonholes this time.

When Paula participated in the Artists' Studio Tour at her home in Minnesota last month, one of her customers asked her to make a coat from a huge white wool blanket (Hudson Trapper's Point). The black stripes on the blanket would be placed near the hem and on the sleeves. Paula found a Butterick See and Sew Jacket pattern that might please her customer. She plans to send the pattern to her and think about what she would charge to make the lined coat.

Mary's tote bags were crisp and smooth. The one intended for her friend used April Cornell's floral fabrics. Very nice shapes. Mary used fusible Pellon for the sides and made a bottom of two layers of matching fabrics over the Pellon. Interesting feature: Mary put elastic inside the loop closure providing a stretchiness for the loop.

Mary's tip: Indian saaris, using 6 yards of fabric, are becoming rare because of the changing styles of the younger women. She heard that saaris are no longer being manufactured.
Mary's magazine: Quilter's Home had an article about Kim Schaefer who reportedly lives in SE Wisconsin.

Jo brought a belt that her daughter made using black twill tape enhanced with white lace and finished with a large circular buckle.

Jo's recommendations: Lucky magazine that shows and describes clothing trends and M &J Trims, a store in Manhattan.

Maria's projects involved bobbin work used in machine embroidery on a jumper.

She experimented with angelina fiber in the motifs. The denim jacket she made from a McCall's pattern used bobbin work for embellishment using beautiful Candlelight brand threads. A beautiful jacket that is sure to fit every figure!
Maria's question: Has anyone used "Peggy's stitch eraser" for removing machine embroidery stitches?

Sandy's tee shirt quilt was made using 33 of her granddaughter's high school tee shirts. The size was a surprise, 87" x 103". It will be quilted by someone else!

Summary of Sew Savvy Meeting on 7/9/09 at Piece by Piece, Appleton

Dyed fabric

After Sandy showed a few pieces of recently dyed fabrics, Mary H. mentioned that she plans to use her pieces of dyed fabric as part of a faux stained glass project.
It is possible to dye fabric in a microwave oven and there are several useful sites on the internet. See the topic “microwave dyeing” and look at Lynn Koolish’s book _Fast, Fun & Easy Fabric Dyeing, _also on the internet.

When Rami Kim gave a presentation to the Darting Needles Quilt Guild in Appleton last year, she sold many leather purse handles for tote bags. One of the tote bags which was not included in her classroom instruction was entitled “Twenty-two Squares Tote Bag”. Sandy finished her version of the bag using drapery fabric which had been cut into 6 inch squares, embroidered with stylized, abstract, heads of women and sewn into the zigzag shaped tote bag. “Pretty Women” was the software program for the heads.

Garments
Sandy showed her version of Mary Mulari’s pattern for a reversible grilling apron. One fabric shows chef symbols (Robert Kaufman Fabric purchased at Quilted Basket in Menominee Falls) and the other fabric has red and green chili peppers on a black background (also a Kaufman Fabric.) Maria told about her experiences selling her garments at the recent Cedarburg Strawberry Festival and at the Fourth of July Celebration in Bailey’s Harbor (Door County).

Atlas Coffee Mill in Appleton will sell items on consignment with a 40% commission.

Maria went to a presentation on using a serger to make garments at Hancock Fabrics in Appleton. She highly recommended Nancy Bednar’s book on Serging. Nancy was the presenter.

Lakeside Quilt Guild in Oshkosh will have its quilt show on July 30 at the Oshkosh Seniors Center, North Campus. Deadline for submissions is July 15.
